The Story

Enlist the services of Orvis-endorsed guide Capt. Richard Andrews on your fly-fishing trip to North Carolina. Capt. Richard was born and raised in Eastern North Carolina and has over twenty years of experience as a guide and charter captain. After earning a B.A. in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a M.S. in natural resources from North Carolina State University, Capt. Richard began his guiding career working on offshore sportfishing boats out of Oregon Inlet on North Carolina's Outer Banks. After years of catching big pelagic species offshore, Capt. Richard saw the potential in building a year-round guide service in North Carolina's Inner Banks and moved to Bath, NC, on the Pamlico River. The estuaries of North Carolina’s Inner Banks have excellent year-round fishing for a variety of species and are home to some quaint, scenic, and historic coastal communities. His goal is to provide guests with a fun and educational experience and in-depth instruction on a variety of topics including:

  • Targeted species behavior and seasonal patterns
  • Where and how to find game fish by breaking down a large body of water
  • Habitat preferences and estuarine ecosystems
  • Geographical orientation on the water
  • Technical aspects of fly/lure presentation and terminal tackle rigging
  • Improving casting skills
  • Advantages of various gear, equipment, and tackle

Highlights:

  • Striped bass, redfish, speckled trout, shad
  • Fish North Carolina's Pamlico Sound and Tributaries
  • Experienced, local guides who are patient and instructional
  • Rates start at $500 for a half-day four-hour excursion
  • Year-round fly fishing

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Tar-Pam Guide Service offers a brand-new three-bedroom, two-bathroom lodge in Bath's Historic District just steps away from the water. The lodge has a fully furnished kitchen and all the comforts of home. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and the two other rooms have two single beds in each room, sleeping five to six guests comfortably. Outside, there is a gas grill and an adjacent empty lot for boat parking if needed.

In the mornings, our guests who are staying at the lodge are either picked up or follow their guide to the boat ramp. Our guests who are driving in will meet us at the ramp. All gear and equipment for fishing is provided, so that you can simply step on and off the boat without bringing a thing (although we don't discourage guests from bringing their own rods). We do not provide lunch, so our guests can bring a small cooler with their lunch, snacks, or any specialty drinks. We provide bottled water and ice. We usually take a short lunch break or eat while moving from one location to the next, so as not to limit our fishing time. Our charters are designed to be serious fishing trips, but we also like to maintain a laid-back, hospitable attitude. We strive to provide as much instruction as desired and educate our guests about the area and our fishery so that they have a well-rounded experience.

North Carolina's Inner Banks are a special place where the freshwater rivers originating from North Carolina and Virginia's mountain foothills and central Piedmont meet the state's vast coastal brackish estuaries. The Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds and their associated tributaries are some of the most extensive estuaries in the United States and host a variety of saltwater and freshwater species, including striped bass, redfish, flounder, spotted sea trout, weakfish, tarpon, American and hickory shad, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and most freshwater warmwater species found in the south.

Half-day, four-hour charter: $500
Three-quarter-day, six-hour charter: $650
Full-day, eight-hour charter: $800

Our rates can be found on the Rates page of our website at https://tarpamguide.com/rates/

Do we provide fly rods?

We utilize all Orvis Helios 3 fly rods with appropriate lines and flies; however, we encourage you to bring your own gear if you prefer.

Do we provide lunch?

We do not provide lunch, but you are encouraged to bring your own lunch and any drinks other than water if you'd like as we provide bottled water and ice.

Do I need to purchase a fishing license?
